Of Family and Place

From her home at Nursery Place, built in 1790 Joan Bowman Pursley Mayer recounts the history of the land her family settled in the early 1800s.

Her stories cover her family, especially her parents William Fauntleroy Pursley and her mother Charlotte Bowman Pursley. Her parents were instrumental in the early years of the Iroquois Hunt Club and Ms. Mayer devotes an entire section to the hunt club and its home at historic Grimes Mill.

Stories abound of farm life growing up in the 1940s and 50s  in Clark County Kentucky. From a rural upbringing to college and becoming the first woman to be named Master of Fox Hounds in the long history of the Iroquois Hunt Club (after serving as Whipper-In for 15 years) Mayer herself has led a colorful and full life.

She shares those experiences in the pages of her book Of Family and Place.

The book concludes with a genealogy section on the early families of Clark County that settled in and around the lands first settled by Daniel Boone.

A fascinating read.....
